UPDATE: The Tribute album can now be downloaded from Bad Religion's MySpace. Clicke here to download the file.
MySpace and SPIN will release an exclusive Bad Religion tribute album next month. Here is what MySpace has written in their blog:
"For many, Bad Religion has been a hugely influential band who, beyond almost anyone’s expectations, is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year with the release of their new album, The Dissent Of Man. But that’s not all. The band has also helped us, along with our good friends at SPIN, in shaping Germs Of Perfection, an exclusive tribute album featuring artists like Tegan And Sara, Ted Leo, Fake Problems—along with nearly a dozen more—covering some of the band’s most celebrated tracks.
Over the next three weeks, we will be posting one song a day (barring weekends) to stream. Then, on October 19th, we will offer up the entire album as a free download on both MySpace Music’s homepage and through SPIN.com."
Read the complete article here
Also, a couple of weeks ago Brett retweeted a tweet from the Cobra Skulls, who are apparently also doing a cover for the tribute album:
cobraskulls: "Fat Mike doing doing harmonies on our cover of 'Give You Me' for the upcoming Bad Religion tribute album!"
Covers:
Tegan And Sara - Suffer
Polar Bear Club - Better Off Dead
Frank Turner - My Poor Friend Me
Cobra Skulls ft. Fat Mike - Give You Nothing
New Politics - Generator
Riverboat Gamblers - Heaven Is Falling
Ted Leo - Against The Grain
William Elliott Whitmore - Don't Pray On Me
The Weakerthans - Sanity
Cheap Girls - Kerosene
Guttermouth - Pity
Switchfoot - Sorrow

There is no need for crappy punk covers, I agree. The genre bending tracks on this disc (like Suffer and Generator) are full of awesome. How has a band so thoroughly dedicated to enlightenment bred so many ignorant and hardheaded fans?
there is no need for a cover album due to the fact that bad religion did it perfect the first time.
well said!!! i finally got around to listening these covers. there are a few good attempts, a few hits but too many misses. I would think they would have actual punk bands doing the tribute...
Like... it would be cool if ALL or the Descendents came into a studio and churned out a song.
I dont know many of these 'leading artists of today' with the exception of Guttermouth. i guess Myspace/Spin Magazine/whoever put this togehter were trying to promote their own artists they support...it just wasnt a successful campaign

Yeah, them too. I'm surprised they dropped Fake Problems and OWTH. They're both pretty well known bands, they would have been a nice addition.

They dropped some bands. Off With Their Heads did a cover of Sorrow and Myspace rejected it, so there was probably more.

This could have been awesome, but guess he was just fucking around. Or did Myspace really drop a band or two, weren't there supposed to be more songs?

I really like The Weakerthans take on Sanity, it gives me the feeling of being in an asylum. So good. The Guttermouth Pity is pretty awesome too. I keep listening to those two over and over. The rest are pretty good too, but I'm not so into Switchfoot, or their cover of Sorrow.

I think that this was actually the best way to approach assembling a BR tribute, because they've been so influential to the pop-punk movement, if they had put 12 pop punk bands on it, you would have 12 exact copies of BR songs, and because the originals would be so much better, the most interest way to cover BR is to do it an a different style. Plus guttermouth and cobra skulls give you the punk you so desperately wanted to hear!

Pardon my French but are you fucking kidding me - -160 kbps? I also love that the Devil in Stitches BR extra is thrown on at 320 kbps and sounds so much better than the rest. This whole thing just screams of laziness, which is a shame because it's interesting to hear some of the covers (I like the Polkarator one, Kerosene one, the Better Off Dead one and the Pity one)
Yes it's nice to get a free album but I don't even consider this an "album" because of 160 kbps, the tacked on track at the end, etc. I know I'm a big critic of digital files but at least KR lets you dl FLAC! Nothing here
If this was put in stores like Hot Topic for a cheap price like their other comps, I would probably buy it (plus it beats most of the rest of the music being played in that store..sadly a lot of that music is Emotaph now that I think about it, lol...). But not having a physical format AND not having lossless or even good sound quality...sorry, that just ticks me off

You hit the nail on the head. Same problem I have with Punk Goes Acoustic stuff. And man, check out the drop off in band quality (imho) from the first CD to the second. The first had Strung Out and Thrice, the second had Alesana and the All American Rejects. I remember posting on the myspace page for Punk Goes Acoustic 2 when it said 'post the bands/songs' you wanted to see. Well Anti-Flag got on but I really wanted PUNK type bands (go figure...on a "Punk" titled cd)...I would LOVE an acoustic Quincentuple Your Money (Lawrence Arms) among others. Never good when these bands are picked based on popularity! Nope nope nope Though I must say I enjoy the Kerosene cover the best (again, go figure). I think it evokes the folky feeling of Recipe for Hate actually! 10/08/2010 at 20:06

Polka rocks! So I like this Generator cover. Even if the "it's the generator!" shout reminds me of Fred Durst lol.
What was AMAZING was a cover on youtube of Generator. It hasn't been on there for like two years but I still remember it. A band named MLT (I think?) they also did Offspring Kids Aren't Alright and were a three-piece. Idk, something about them were awesome. Not to hijack but I also love the Fillips Firma cover of Alien by Pennywise. Would love to hear a Pennywise tribute album! Or even better a Strung Out one!!! 10/02/2010 at 13:05

No offense to him or his fans as I am just feeling 'neutral' in my disregard, but tbh I couldn't care less about Frank Turner's music..just not my style really. That said, man did he pick a great BR song!

Better Off Dead was an awesome cover musically, but the singing left a lot to be desired. Not a fan of that gravely whining type sound.

It blows me away that people hate on covers. You know what? If John Tesh put out a BR cover album, I'd buy that shit. I love hearing how other bands interpret the music. 09/28/2010 at 17:13

the Tegan and Sara song, Hell is an awesome fucking song. The suffer cover they do is fucking horrrrrible.
I actually developed a liking for their music, by just skipping the cover and listening to their other music.
Very good way of giving other bands coverage

I don't mind the cover of Suffer, not something I would listen to at home, but it is an interesting alternative verrsion from both the original and Graffin's acoustic folk one. But the Polar Bear Club version of Better off Dead is completely pointless. Anathema's slow version is the only ccover of Better off Dead that worth paying attention to - it actually gets to the very core of the song and the emotions felt... sort of, though some people might think it turns it directly into a ballad rather than it's original intention.

I really don't care for Polar Bear Club at all, which is why I was surprised that I didn't think their cover was god awful. Tegan and Sara are alright, as was their cover. I'm impressed they got two groups with as much name recognition as these two to do covers. Makes me excited to hear who else they got on here.

Like the Polar Bear Club cover much more than Tegan and Sara's cover. The bass sounds awesome. Reminds me of Anti-Flag and early Alkaline Trio songs (Cringe, Cop). Vocals are nice too, though they sound a little derivative (Michale Graves, Derek Grant, etc...and my bad if this band is fronted by the former, I have no earthly idea and don't want to look it up right now lol)

Well, Polar Bear Club (whoever that is) posted up their cover of Better Off Dead.
http://www.myspace.com/polarbearclub/music/songs/bettter-off-dead-74957268 It's pretty solid, but it doesn't stray far from the original. 09/27/2010 at 19:15

I love when covers sound different from the originals, but also different from THIS FUCKING TERRIBLE COVER. Tegan and Sara? I don't know who these spoiled art school cunts are, but I hope I never hear their music again. Let's hope the rest of this album is 2.0e492853 times better than this song.
I thought that was basic, unavoidable knowledge for Canadians! :) I live across the river from Canada so the local "alternative" station here happens to be broadcast out of Canada and is therefore subject to the "Canadian content" regulations, so there's ample amounts of Tegan and Sara, Our Lady Peace, et al.
Yeah, the first time I ever heard of them were from that song. I assumed that they were some punk group considering Fat Mike wrote the song. The only other time I heard their name was when there was some TV program going on after the Haiti earthquake featuring a bunch of celebrities telling people to donate one of them, and Tegan and Sara said something, and I was like "Hey, they were mentioned in a NOFX song!". Then again, I don't really listen to any pop radio stations with artists like them. 09/27/2010 at 17:51

Not enamored with the Tegan and Sara cover. But it is pretty catchy. I suppose it does have sort of a despairing/resignation vibe like the original, but idk. We'll see what the others turn out like. I think my main problem with this is the "today's artists" part...I have to suffer (or block friends) through hearing on facebook about how 'liek amazing' these new bands are like Emarosa and Meg and Dia and 3OH!3 (the worst by far, imho). Meanwhile, I watch a vid or two of NOFX playing The Decline, rare songs, classic staples etc and get totally no-sold by the crowd. Heck I went to a Bayside (one of the more current bands I love) show where they covered Linoleum as the last song and hardly anyone but me knew it! The overall point is that I think a lot of my resignation with these covers is a general disenchantment with current artists. But for what its worth, I love when covers aren't like the original. Confusing huh?
